Lyrics and Why: Kick Me
Kick me is a song Silver Lights wrote with our good friend Evan Gettig. Whether he wants to be or not, we consider Evan a crucial factor in writing Silver Lights songs, and is honestly one of my (Coty) biggest inspirations for writing. This calm-collected man has a never-ending creative flow with influences across every genre. One day he decided to bring over his acoustic and started singing this chorus he wrote for it. Immediately I was in, and within the hour, Kick Me was born. . .
I’ve been alone in the closet Seven minutes of heaven Been thinking back to a time Where we lived in the present We’ve been growing so old But we’re on separate vacations After all of these years I miss the bad communication And I know that I miss you too Because I know you
Just go I hide it on the inside so well I’m taking my mistakes Buried them away so you can’t tell That I know Of all the things that seem to hold you down I’m taking your mistakes I’m throwing them away to say farewell
Desperate times come with desperate measures Hit me with that one liner and try to ease the pressure That’s been building from all that she did to me I don’t want to do the same to you because I don’t like the
irony Do you see the air tonight Filling with nostalgic lights I still feel the heat from out last fight I’m going to make sure this ends just right I’ll make sure this ends right |
Just go I hide it on the inside so well I’m taking my mistakes Buried them away so you can’t tell That I know Of all the things that seem to hold you down I’m taking your mistakes I’m throwing them away to say farewell
Honesty was over do But most of all the debts to myself All along I never knew I held the key to letting myself out But the honest truth What was best for me was not the best for you What is best for you what I’ll have to do
Just go I hide it on the inside so well I’m taking my mistakes Buried them away so you can’t tell That I know Of all the things that seem to hold you down I’m taking your mistakes I’m throwing them away to say farewell

Evan’s chorus that starts with “Just Go” gave me the feeling of regret. Occasionally when I reminisce on a thought that leaves me in a melancholy state, the situation almost becomes present again. Like I’m reliving the memory firsthand. I thought it would be interesting to write the lyrics almost like a co-existing reflection of the past and the present. The song starts in the present but reflects different moments throughout a relationship until it reaches a climactic resolution. The narrator realizes the best for their lover is not them.
I'm a storyteller. I take the experiences of others, my experiences, and the story that others have written and reimagine them in a big twisted mess. That is when lyrics are born.
