Entertainment Industry Mindsets: "What Else?"
Have you ever heard of a Decision Tree?
When you decide to go out into the world, think positively, and create a life worth living. You'll realize pretty quickly that life isn't that simple. Don't take this the wrong way. There's nothing wrong with going about your life thinking you can do anything you want, but what does it take to do whatever you want? After you figure out what it takes, then how do you acquire what it takes? This is the agonizing reality behind it all. To be successful, you need to develop a "What Else?" mindset that involves some form of Decision Tree.
A What Else mindset is when someone sits down and tells themselves, "I need to answer more questions than I am ever going to be asked." Whether you're fending off competition, attempting to make a sale, or developing a fan base, being the smartest person in the room will always give you the advantage. I mean, what's more, impressive than rolling into a room, answering every question you're asked with precision, and giving them some information they didn't even know they needed yet? The answer to this question is... nothing!
The Decision Tree basically is a form of outlining questions and answers. The tree will help you organize the What Else mentality you're developing. You start out with a question like, "Who are the people that will listen to my music or watch my streams?" After the question is asked, you research and brainstorm as many answers as possible. (Remember, entertainment is subjective, and there is never just one answer for your audience's preferences.) Once you've answered your question thoroughly, you develop more questions based on the answers. That's it! Some of you might think this sounds simple enough, and some might think this sounds stupid and complicated. Either way, I have found The Decision Tree method to be the best way to begin formulating a strategy and a plan for marketing music and helping others develop their own markets.
